Ukraine has always been one of the countries to which foreign students have been willingly coming for higher education. But with the beginning of a military conflict on the territory of our country, the number of young people from other states who would like to study in Ukraine has decreased dramatically.
What is important to know for foreign students about the conflict in Donbass?
In early March 2014 in Donetsk and Lugansk regions took place the protests of pro-Russian agents and anti-government groups. These events have resulted in an armed conflict between Ukraine and Russia in the East of Ukraine. As a result, many enterprises, organizations and institutions were forced to change their location due to the unstable situation. Despite the fact, that an insignificant part of this region is still under the occupation of Russian troops, during these three years of struggle Ukrainian authorities have established a control on many territories of Donetsk and Lugansk region. In addition to the fact that this conflict did not affect other regions, it is absolutely safe and calm in the nearby territories to the conflict zone, which are under control of Ukrainian government.
Do the universities in Ukraine, which were situated in Lugansk and Donetsk regions, continue their work?
Among foreign applicants Donetsk and Lugansk were known for their strong universities providing high-quality education at the European level. But after the instable situation in Donbass had progressed, many of future students took off from their consideration the universities that were situated there. But this approach is wrong, because the majority of Donetsk and Lugansk universities continue their work, but in other regions of Ukraine.
If talking about specific universities, then it’s useful to notice, that Donetsk National University moved on to Vinnitsa, and now is working on the base of a jewelry plant “Kristal”. Donetsk National Technical University operates in Pokrovsk, and National Agricultural University of Lugansk today is situated in Kharkiv. If you are interested in question “Where to study medicine in Ukraine”, then take note that Donetsk National Medical University has been dislocated to the city of Liman, and a learning process takes place in Kramatorsk.
Has it changed something for foreigners that want to study in Ukraine?
Of course, the military conflict on part of the Ukrainian territory forced many organizations to change their whereabouts, including universities. Most of them moved to a very big city of Kharkiv, which in the past was the Ukrainian capital. Nevertheless, one should know that changing an address didn’t effect the educational process in any way. All higher education institutions continue their work stably and are ready to provide foreign students with an opportunity to receive education in Ukraine.
Today Ukrainian universities which were situated in Lugansk and Donetsk regions, offer the students from other countries following opportunities:
- educational process in English;
- intensive courses on learning the Ukrainian language, which help students to adapt to a new country;
- convenient and comfortable campuses to live while studying in Ukraine;
- a lot of international programs of practice and internship.
If you doubt whether it’s worth studying in Ukraine, then the answer is unequivocal – yes! Regardless of whether you want to get a medical education in Ukraine or any other, our universities will be happy to see you among their students.
